Mexicola Grande Avocado - Grafted (Persea americana)

Cold tolerant Mexicola Grande (Type A) produces medium sized fruit with paper-thin, glossy black skin that is edible. The flesh is deep green near the skin and yellow near the seed, with a rich, nutty flavour. Mexicola is the only avocado cultivar with edible skin and leaves. The leaves have a strong anise aroma and are used to impart a unique flavour in Mexican recipes. Mexicola is the most frost resistant of all avocados. Perfect plant for anywhere in NZ.

Most of the grafted Avocado plants will start flowering as early as 18 months when planted in the ground or in a planter box given the right conditions and care.

Plant is 2+ years.

Plant Care

Light

Plant in a warm sheltered position.

Water

Plenty of water around summer, less during winter. Never let the soil dry out or the root to soak in water

Soil

Well-draining, mulch well to keep moist all year around. Prefer to be planted on the mound. Can't tolerate clayish soil. Add scoria at the bottom of planter/pot for good drainage and some blood and bone in the hole prior to planting

Fertilizer

Every 4 weeks from spring to autumn. Love seaweed juice. Mulch and use any kind of fertilizer. Nitrogen hungry.  Give chicken manure 3 times a year

Wind

Keep away from strong wind. Young or small plants will require protection cover to establish well. Stake the plant /branch for support

Frost

Frost tender when young, provide shade or cloth cover during winter. An exception is the Mexicola variety which is very frost tolerant

Fruiting

1-2 years for grafted and cutting grown. 4+ years from seedlings. Planting both A and B types improves fruit set. Plant flowers like lavender close by to encourage bees around

Pruning

Every 1st April for vigorous growth the following season

Growing well - 1 year later

Thanks Rose for sending me a wonderful Mexicola avocado. Initially I wasn't sure if the Mexicola would survive. It is cold here in Taupo. Temperatures in June 2023 have reached -4'C in the morning. The plant is holding up just fine (see pic - plant is now 1 year old since being planted this time last year). I am so impressed I have placed another order for yet another Mexicola avocado.
