Green Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxylum genus)

The Sichuan pepper is a shrub that bears the delicious Sichuan pepper. The peppers are used widely all over the world for their unique and spicy aroma!

When eaten it produces a tingling, numbing effect due to the presence of hydroxy-alpha sanshool in the peppercorn. Despite its name, Sichuan pepper is not closely related to either black pepper or chili pepper. It belongs to the global genus Zanthoxylum in the family Rutaceae, which includes citrus and rue.

Plant Care 

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH around 6.0 to 7.0.
  • Watering: Moderate needs; somewhat drought-tolerant once established.
  • Temperature: Ideal between 15°C and 25°C.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Fertilising: Feed with a balanced NPK like 10-10-10 in early spring and mid-summer.
  • Pruning: Prune to shape and remove dead or overcrowded branches in late winter or early spring.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pest Control: Monitor for pests such as aphids and scale, treating with appropriate methods if necessary.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by aromatic peppercorns in late summer or early autumn.
  • Potting: Suitable for container growing if space is limited, with adequate drainage.
  • Feeding Regime: Regular feeding with balanced fertilizer supplemented by compost or well-rotted manure enhances growth and fruit production.
