Pecan Nut (Carya ilionoensis)

The nuts of the pecan are edible, with a rich, buttery flavour. Pecans are a good source of protein and unsaturated fats. They can be eaten fresh or used in cooking. One of the most common desserts is the pecan pie. The wood is also used in making furniture and wood flooring. Also makes a good shade tree.

It has an open, rounded crown and the trunk sports attractive grey, furrowed bark.

The leaves are mid green, turning yellow in autumn before falling. The flowers are quite insignificant, but are followed by the tasty nuts.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Thrives in deep, well-drained sandy loam soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.
  • Watering: Requires deep, infrequent watering, especially important during dry periods and when nuts are developing.
  • Temperature: Can tolerate a range from -20°C to 40°C, but requires a long, warm growing season for nut maturation.
  • Light: Full sun is essential for healthy growth and optimal nut production.
  • Fertilising: Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer like 10-10-10 in early spring to encourage leaf and branch growth. Follow with a low-nitrogen, high-potassium and phosphorus fertilizer like 0-10-10 closer to nut set.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead or diseased branches and to open up the canopy for light and air circulation.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pest Control: Monitor for pecan weevil and scab. Use appropriate insecticides and fungicides as part of an integrated pest management plan.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces separate male and female flowers on the same tree. Nuts mature in the fall.
  • Potting: Not suitable for potting due to extensive root system and large size.
  • Feeding Regime: Regular feeding during the growth season enhances nut development and overall tree health.
