Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica)

Clusters of woolly white perfumed flowers in winter followed by yellow round/oval juicy fruit. The skin is smooth and slightly hairy. Excellent flavour with a good balance between acid and sweetness. The flesh is firm and has apricot/plum flavour. Each fruit contains 2-8 largest brown seeds. Trees can be biennial bearing.

Great in a container for the smaller garden, or as a specimen tree in the large garden. The round headed trees can be used to shade a patio. Loquats also make attractive espaliers.

Disclaimer:
From 1 July 2022, the propagation, distribution, release or sale of Loquat plants within the Auckland region is prohibited. Exceptions apply if you are transferring an existing plant on your land to another location within the boundaries of the same property. We will ship these from our nursery outside Auckland where they are grown to comply with the rules. Please consider the above when making a decision to purchase this plant.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter.
  • Watering: Water regularly, ensuring that the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Temperature: Best in temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Frost-tolerant to a degree but young plants should be protected.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade, with some protection from intense afternoon sun in hotter regions.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced NPK fertilizer such as 10-10-10 every three months during the growing season. Supplement with iron if leaves yellow.
  • Pruning: Prune annually to maintain shape and remove damaged or diseased limbs, which helps promote healthier fruiting and growth.
  • Mulching: Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.
  • Pest Control: Watch for pests like scale insects and fruit flies. Treat with appropriate pesticides or natural alternatives as necessary.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small white flowers in the autumn or early winter, with fruits ripening in late winter to early spring.
  • Potting: Can be grown in a large container, ensure it has adequate drainage. Monitor watering needs more closely in pots.
  • Feeding Regime: Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer supports fruit development and overall plant health.
