Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica)

Sweet Tamarind is such a delicious treat. Can be cooked or eaten raw, with a little bit of tarty flavor, the pulp is sweet, the taste is like a cross between a raisin and a delicious dates. Sweet Tamarind is so unique because it is a fruit, a condiment and also a spice.The pulp of the fruit is a rich source of many essential nutrients, phytochemicals and antioxidants that all play a role in keeping you healthy. The leaves are highly nutritious often added to soup and stir fry and powdered as a superfood.

Whilst the perfect growing condition would be in the ground, they would make a happy indoor plants too if planted in a large pot, or train like a bonsai and receives a lot of love from you.

Plant Care

• Soil: Prefers deep, well-draining sandy or loamy soils with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.
• Watering: Drought-tolerant once established, but young trees benefit from regular watering.
• Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 20°C and 35°C.
• Light: Requires full sun for maximum fruit production.
• Fertilising: Apply a balanced NPK fertilizer like 10-10-10 annually at the start of the rainy season.
• Pruning: Prune to remove dead branches and manage the canopy for better light penetration and fruit production.
• Mulching: Use organic mulch to help retain soil moisture and provide nutrients.
• Pest Control: Monitor for pests such as aphids and mealybugs; manage with organic treatments.
• Flowering and Fruiting: Produces yellow flowers with red stripes; fruit pods mature in late spring to early summer and are sweeter than the traditional tamarind.
• Potting: Not ideal for potting due to potential large size.
• Feeding Regime: Annual application of balanced fertilizer aids healthy growth and fruiting.
