Pomegranate (Punica granatum)

The 'Wonderful' Pomegranate is quite well known due to its large almost grapefruit sized fruit.

It has bright red skin and deep red juicy flesh pomegranate is one of the most popular, due to its large purple-red fruit and tangy flavour.

It can also be used ornamentally as its flowers are almost as boastful as the fruit! Ripens in the autumn bringing some colour and tanginess to the season.  

Plant Care

• Soil: Grows in a range of soils but prefers deep, well-drained loam. Soil pH of 5.5 to 7 is optimal.
• Watering: Requires regular watering, but established plants are drought tolerant. Avoid waterlogging.
• Temperature: Resilient to both hot summers and cold winters, but may need protection from frost when young.
• Light: Full sun is necessary for best fruit production.
• Fertilising: Balanced NPK fertiliser is recommended during the growing season to encourage flowering and fruiting.
• Pruning: Prune to remove dead or overcrowded branches, and to encourage bushier growth.
• Mulching: Apply mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk.
• Flowering & Fruiting: Flowers in summer with fruits ripening in late autumn.
• Potting: Suitable for pot cultivation if pruned to manage size.
• Fertilising Regime: Apply fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer.
