Rex Cherimoya (Annona cherimola)
Rex Cherimoya is one of the rarest varieties of Cherimoya in NZ. The origin of Rex is one excellent tasting variety of Ecuadorian cherimoya crossed with one other amazing variety of cherimoya by the late David Austen- a well known plant enthusiast in Far North NZ quite a while ago. The seeds were sourced from a very reliable nursery in NZ.
The fruit size is medium with almost non gritty flesh. In NZ Rex can only be purchased through private growers or collectors. It bears fruit from as early as 3 to 4 years with the right conditions and care.
Cherimoyas are egg-shaped, globe-shaped or heart-shaped with an unusual velvety, thin skin that is light green in colour. The white pulp offers a mild flavour likened to a blend of banana, vanilla, mango, papaya, pineapple and coconut.
Most Cherimoyas are true to type and self - pollinate. However hand pollination might be required for certain varieties, we recommend buying two plants for cross pollination and to improve the quality of taste.
Our plants are nearly 3+ years
Disclaimer:
Although some seed grown plants are not true to type, they will still provide you with a delicious tasting fruit in years to come.
