Longan Kohala (Dimocarpus longan)

Super Rare and Only a Limited Quantity Available

The Grafted Kohala Longan plants are  very very special addition to anyone who loves this fruit but does not like waiting for long. The plant were grafted from a heavily fruiting mother plant grown in NZ and fully acclimatized to NZ weather condition.

A longan or dragon eye tree is perfect if you like lychees and rambutans but your climate isn’t quite tropical enough, as they will tolerate much cooler temperatures.

A highly sought after plant in New Zealand. Kohala is an exceptional variety it has smaller seeds and thick flesh. Very sweet, large, plump and juicy flesh.

Longan trees are part of the Dimocarpus family, an attractive small to medium sized tree with lots of lovely reddish new growth through spring and summer and a heavy canopy of shiny, green leaves, although you may want to keep them smaller or thin the canopy to make harvesting the fruit easier.

See the last photo of my own Longan fruiting in a pot at home in Auckland!

We recommended to keep the plant in a pot for a while until it reaches 1m tall before attempting to replant in the ground. The plants are happily growing in a medium size pot.

1-2 years to get established and fruiting approximately.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with a neutral pH.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during the fruiting season.
  • Temperature: Best in warm subtropical climates, between 20°C and 30°C.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 every three months during the growing season. Increase phosphorus and potassium intake during fruit development.
  • Pruning: Prune to remove dead branches and to maintain air circulation within the canopy.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch to conserve soil moisture and maintain even soil temperatures.
  • Pest Control: Watch for aphids, mites, and fruit flies. Treat with appropriate eco-friendly options.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers followed by round, juicy fruits. Fruit typically matures in the late summer.
  • Potting: Can be grown in large containers but requires diligent care to manage watering and nutrient needs.
  • Feeding Regime: High potassium fertilizer during the flowering and fruit development stages can improve fruit quality.

We ship our plants and garden supplies throughout New Zealand. Due to the increased costs of shipping and packaging, we now apply a minimal delivery charge. After offering free shipping for three consecutive years, we find it necessary to adjust this policy to align with current market conditions. However, we have lowered our prices to help offset this change.

Please note, we do not ship plants or garden supplies internationally from New Zealand. We do export plants and tissue culture materials from our overseas nursery, which requires a minimum order. Please contact us at hello@exoticanz.com to discuss your specific requirements.

Additional Delivery Information

  • We dispatch our plants year-round, as most are shipped with soil. During the winter months, we closely monitor weather conditions and may temporarily delay shipments if the weather is particularly severe. Our packing process includes adding insulation when necessary to protect the plants against temperature extremes.
  • In summer, we ensure that plants are thoroughly watered before they leave our nursery. Occasionally, we may need to ship plants bare-rooted, particularly when they cannot be comfortably re-potted into smaller packaging for shipping. We will always discuss this with you in advance if your plant needs to be shipped in this manner.
  • It's important to note that shipping can be a stressful experience for plants, often due to spending several days in a dark, confined space. While most plants withstand this with little to no stress, some may experience leaf drop. However, they generally recover quickly with some additional care, including proper watering and gradual reintroduction to light after arrival.
