Shampoo Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet)
A Shampoo Ginger gets its name from a viscous liquid in the mature flower. Smelling lightly of sweet ginger, it is used as a shampoo, conditioner, soap or massage oil.
A Shampoo Ginger is a species of plant in the ginger family with leafy stems growing to about 1.2 m tall. It originates from Asia, but can be found in many tropical countries.
Whether growing edible or ornamental gingers, they all grow from rhizomes into 3 to 7 foot tall plants. Harvest new rhizomes for cooking or transplanting 10 months to a year after planting. Squeeze the juice from the pine-cone-shaped shampoo ginger after it turns a brilliant red.
Suitable for container growing.
