Longan (Dimocarpus longan)

Longan is a tropical fruit tree native to Asia and has been introduced to tropical and sub-tropical regions throughout the world. The delicious Longan fruit has a sweet butterscotch-like flavour and, when in season, is a staple fruit at Asian supermarkets and produce stands.

The Biew Kiew Longan is a variety from Thailand that's well-suited for growing in subtropical regions with cooler winters. It has a supreme quality fruit with a stronger caramel flavour and smaller seed than most other Longan varieties.

Much like its close relative lychee, the Longan's glossy, dark evergreen leaves emerge from its symmetrical branches, soaking up the sun and growing vigorously in any subtropical or tropical climate.

Disclaimer:
Although some seeds growing plants are not true to type, it will still provide you with a delicious tasting fruit in years to come.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with a neutral pH.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during the fruiting season.
  • Temperature: Best in warm subtropical climates, between 20°C and 30°C.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 every three months during the growing season. Increase phosphorus and potassium intake during fruit development.
  • Pruning: Prune to remove dead branches and to maintain air circulation within the canopy.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch to conserve soil moisture and maintain even soil temperatures.
  • Pest Control: Watch for aphids, mites, and fruit flies. Treat with appropriate eco-friendly options.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers followed by round, juicy fruits. Fruit typically matures in the late summer.
  • Potting: Can be grown in large containers but requires diligent care to manage watering and nutrient needs.
  • Feeding Regime: High potassium fertilizer during the flowering and fruit development stages can improve fruit quality.
