Red Sichuan Pepper(Zanthoxylum Bungeanum)

The Sichuan pepper is a shrub that bears the delicious Sichuan pepper. The peppers are used widely all over the world for their unique and spicy aroma! Sichuan pepper plants are very cold tolerant.

When eaten it produces a tingling, numbing effect due to the presence of hydroxy-alpha sanshool in the peppercorn. The red sichuan pepper is spicier than the green but it doesn't have a strong numbing effects like the green does.

Despite its name, Sichuan pepper is not closely related to either black pepper or chili pepper. It belongs to the global genus Zanthoxylum in the family Rutaceae, which includes citrus and rue.
Plant is 3 years.

Plant Care Instructions Doc

Plant Care

Light

Grow in full sun. Will grow very vigorously late spring early summer right through autumn. Can tolerate semi share. Soft branches might need staking in the first few years. Suitable for pot growing outdoors

Water

Like a lot of water especially during summer. Does not like dry soil nor wet feet. Much less during winter, will stay dormant and lose its leaves but bounces back in spring

Soil

Well-draining. Grow them like a citrus tree. They love citrus specific mix soil or high quality potting mix

Fertiliser

Fertilize them like you would for citrus. Love nitrogen rich fertiliser. Little or no fertiliser during cold/winter season. General fertilizing every 3-4 months will keep the plant healthy

Wind

Fairly wind tolerant but young plants have tender branches; staking and wind protection cover is important until they are established. Small trees will do best with some protection

Frost

Will tolerate light frost but will do better without. Young plants will need protection cover

Fruiting

3+ years

Pruning

A small trim of dead or old branches will help to keep the plant at a manageable height and size but be weary not to prune the new growth where the flowers will emerge
