Wampee or Wampi (Clausena lansium)

The Wampee or Wampi fruit might remain an enigma to many, but for those with an inclination towards exotic fruits, it’s a real treasure. Despite its rarity suggesting a complex cultivation process, the Wampi is surprisingly easy to grow, much like cultivating citrus. Our plant is matured and grafted from fruiting mother plant grown in NZ.

Its fruit showcases a soft exterior, with an inner flesh reminiscent of grapes. Depending on the specific tree, its taste ranges from sweet to tart. They can be enjoyed whole, similar to a kumquat. Beyond its fruit, the Wampi tree’s foliage stands out, with an aroma and flavor akin to curry—a unique feature indeed.

Plant Care

• Soil: Wampee thrives in well-drained, fertile soils that are rich in organic matter. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH but can tolerate a range of soil conditions.
• Watering: This tree requires regular watering to establish a deep and extensive root system, especially during its formative years and in dry conditions. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture.
• Temperature: Wampee is suited to warm climates and can tolerate a range of temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 30°C. It is somewhat frost-tolerant but young trees should be protected from severe cold.
• Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun is essential for healthy growth, flowering, and fruit production, but in very hot climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the tree from excessive heat.
• Fertilising: Feed with a balanced NPK fertilizer every few months during the growing season to support growth and fruit development. An application of a potassium-rich fertilizer during the fruiting period can enhance fruit quality.
• Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Pruning helps promote good air circulation, reduces the risk of disease, and can enhance fruit size and quality.
• Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients as it decomposes. Keep the mulch away from the trunk to prevent moisture-related diseases.
• Pest Control: Wampee trees can be susceptible to pests such as aphids, scale insects, and mites. Monitor for pests regularly and use appropriate organic or chemical treatments if necessary.
• Flowering and Fruiting: Wampee produces small, white to yellow flowers that are followed by clusters of round, yellow-orange fruits. The fruits are tangy and aromatic, often eaten fresh or used in jellies and drinks. The fruit typically matures in the summer.
• Potting: Can be grown in a large container for the first few years but will eventually need more space as it matures. Ensure that containers have good drainage.
• Feeding Regime: In addition to regular NPK fertilization, applying compost or well-rotted manure at the base of the tree can provide slow-release nutrients that enhance tree vigor and fruit production.
