Yuzu (Citrus junos)

One of the Most Cold Tolerant Citrus plant! Plants are matured and currently flowering.

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus lemon that is valued for it’s highly aromatic rind.  Yuzu is one of the few citrus in the world that is able to maintain it’s tart/sourness at high cooking temperatures. Because the yuzu is considered a citron, the juice is minimal, thus often expensive.

Outside of a few Asian cuisines and particularly in Japanese cultural circles, yuzu is seldom grown or used because it’s rather rare. Popular in both green and more ripe yellow forms it’s a prized citrus in the culinary world.

Yuzu is sour, tart, very fragrant and slightly smaller than a billiard ball. The intensity and aroma of fresh yuzu is incredible. Yuzu is a citrus that isn’t eaten straight, but is used as a souring ingredient through the use of it’s juice and zest. It is a bit more floral and sour and utterly wonderful. It smells so good the Japanese will use yuzu for perfumes and will ritualistically bath in yuzu during Toji (winter solstice).

Plant Care

Sun

They prefer full sun but in the warm parts of the country will handle some shade.

Water

Not very wind tolerant but reasonably tolerant to salty marine conditions

Soil

To ensure successful fruiting, plant in well-drained fertile soil. Incorporate a good compost and keep mulched.

Fertilizer

Citrus are heavy nutrient feeders, use a high nitrogen NPK fertiliser. Apply 200g at the drip line (2/3 in spring and 1/3 in summer) increasing this by 200g per year until you are applying 2kg. Apply manure in the autumn spread under the tree with mulch.

Wind

Not very wind tolerant when a young seedling, but reasonably tolerant to salty marine conditions.

Frost

Cold tolerant to - 5°C. More hardy once established.

Fruiting

5-6 years from seedlings and up to 8 years in some cases.

Pruning

Citrus are not trained to any particular shape, some varieties do not need any shaping at all. Prune to shape if necessary and any dead or diseased branches. They will tolerate heavy cutting back. Also remove any sucker growth.
