Tangelo Seminole (Citrus x tangelo)

Seminole tangelos are small to medium in size, averaging 8cm in diameter, and are globular-ovate in shape. The thin rind is smooth, shiny, and leathery, pocked with prominent oil glands, and ranges in colour from orange to red-orange. The rind is also somewhat adhered to the orange flesh, which is juicy, tender, and divided into 10-13 segments by thin membranes. The flesh may be seedless or contain many inedible seeds depending on cultivation habits. Seminole tangelos are aromatic and have a sweet flavour mixed with a tart acidity.

Seminole tangelos are an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of calcium and fibre. These vitamins can help protect the overall health of the body, especially against colds and flues.

Seminole tangelos are best suited for fresh eating and juicing. The ovate fruits can be peeled and consumed as a snack, served as a breakfast item, sliced as a healthy dessert, or tossed into fruit bowls and green salads. Seminole tangelos are also popularly juiced and can be mixed into cocktails, smoothies, or sparkling water. Seminole tangelos pair well with spinach, endive, pineapple, pistachios, and beets, and the juice can be used to marinade meats such as pork, poultry, and fish.

Plant Care

Sun

They prefer full sun but in the warm areas of the country will handle some shade. 

Water

Need watering regularly especially during summer. Avoid over watering. 

Soil

Well-draining slightly acidic soils. Use high quality organic mix. Suitable for container.

Fertiliser

Citrus are heavy nutrient feeders, use a high nitrogen NPK fertiliser. Apply 200g at the drip line (2/3 in spring and 1/3 in summer) increasing this by 200g per year until you are applying 2kg. Apply manure in the autumn spread under the tree with mulch.

Wind

Wind tolerant. Young plants need protective cover.

Frost

Frost tender. Young plants need protective cover.

Fruiting

1-3 years after planting for grafted plant.

Pruning

Citrus are not trained to any particular shape, some varieties do not need any shaping at all. Prune to shape if necessary and any dead or diseased branches. They will tolerate heavy cutting back. Also remove any sucker growth.
