Moringa (Moringa oleifera)

Grow your own backyard nutrition with our Moringa oleifera seedlings. Moringa leaves can be eaten fresh like spinach or cooked in a soup. The leaves can also be dehydrated to create tea or nutritional powder.

The young seed pods are great in a stir fry -- just like green beans! The taste is fresh and green with a hint of rocket lettuce-like spiciness.

They don't call moringa the "miracle tree" or "mother's helper" for nothing. Moringa is packed with plant-based protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium.

Plant will die off during winter and losing its leaves then will come back around spring. If they are in the green house will remain its form.

Plants are matured over 3 years.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
  • Watering: Water regularly but allow the soil to dry between waterings to avoid waterlogging. Moringa is drought-tolerant once established.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 35°C but can tolerate slight frosts for short periods.
  • Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth and nutrient production.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise with a balanced NPK (10-10-10) every two months during the growing season. Moringa is a light feeder and excessive fertilizer can harm the plant.
  • Pruning: Prune regularly to promote bushy growth and prevent the tree from becoming leggy. This also makes harvesting leaves easier.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, cool the soil, and provide nutrients as it breaks down.
  • Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by common pests such as aphids. Use natural pesticides as a preventive measure.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, fragrant white flowers that are followed by long, hanging seed pods. Flowers appear within the first six months under optimal conditions.
  • Potting: Can be grown in pots but requires frequent repotting to accommodate rapid growth. Ensure the container has good drainage.
  • Feeding Regime: Light applications of a balanced, organic fertilizer are adequate to support leaf production without encouraging excessive stem growth.
