Turmeric is a plant that is used as a spice and is also found in a wide variety of food supplements on account of its digestive, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In modern times turmeric powder can be purchased in the normal grocery shops, whilst some high quality extract powder have been capsulated and sold in many health store.

Traditionally the turmeric roots are used as condiment  to rice, and often used medicinally to treat mouth ulcers, high blood pressure, eczema, skin infection and many other conditions. With high anti oxidant and anti inflammatory properties, the turmeric has been processed into juice and given to women after childbirth to helps with their internal recovery. Note that turmeric is very popular herbs used in Ayurvedic treatment and medications.

It is recommended that fresh turmeric is used for dishes that would be consumed raw – shakes, milk, smoothies, and even pickles. When cooking, powdered turmeric works better, although you can use fresh turmeric too.

The fresh turmeric leaves are also very popular in Asian dishes like the Rendang, rich chicken dishes with coconut cream, and often used as part of marinades in Satay, and use as a wrap for fish and meat on the barbecue.

In some cultures the leaves are used as part of potpourri to fragrant the room, in the bath and part of religious rituals.

Turmeric plants are deciduous and often die off during winter but re-emerge around the summer time. They are easily grown in a container and will produce bigger leaves size the older they get.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0. Adding organic compost improves nutrient content and drainage.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering when the plant begins to die back.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C. Turmeric is not frost-tolerant and requires protection or indoor cultivation in cooler climates.
  • Light: Grows best in partial shade or indirect sunlight.
  • Fertilising: Use an organic fertilizer high in phosphorus every two months during the active growing season to support root development.
  • Pruning: Not typically required, except to remove dead leaves.
  • Mulching: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pest Control: Generally has few pest problems. Watch for fungal diseases in overly moist conditions.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Rarely flowers outside its native habitat. Harvest the rhizomes at the end of the growing season once the leaves and stem start to brown.
  • Potting: Suitable for container growing in a pot at least 30 cm deep. Ensure adequate drainage and space for rhizomes to expand.
  • Feeding Regime: A balanced organic feeding regimen supports healthy rhizome development.

After offering free shipping for three consecutive years, we find it necessary to adjust this policy to align with current market conditions. However, we have lowered our prices to help offset this change.

Please note, we do not ship plants or garden supplies internationally from New Zealand. We do export plants and tissue culture materials from our overseas nursery, which requires a minimum order. Please contact us at to discuss your specific requirements.

Additional Delivery Information

  • We dispatch our plants year-round, as most are shipped with soil. During the winter months, we closely monitor weather conditions and may temporarily delay shipments if the weather is particularly severe. Our packing process includes adding insulation when necessary to protect the plants against temperature extremes.
  • In summer, we ensure that plants are thoroughly watered before they leave our nursery. Occasionally, we may need to ship plants bare-rooted, particularly when they cannot be comfortably re-potted into smaller packaging for shipping. We will always discuss this with you in advance if your plant needs to be shipped in this manner.
  • It's important to note that shipping can be a stressful experience for plants, often due to spending several days in a dark, confined space. While most plants withstand this with little to no stress, some may experience leaf drop. However, they generally recover quickly with some additional care, including proper watering and gradual reintroduction to light after arrival.
