Davidson's Plum (Davidsonia Pruriens)

This slender-trunked tree with blue-black, plum-like berries is a popular bush tucker plant in Australia. The fruit is quite tart, but makes delicious jam, sauces and desserts. But it’s the way the fruit forms that makes this tree so interesting – it develops as clusters along the main trunk, making it quite an out-of-this-world feature. The plant can be planted in a pot.

Davidson plums are a rich source of anthocyanins, most of which are found in the pigmented skin of the fruit. Anthocyanins provide antioxidant-like properties to protect the cells from free radical damage and reduce inflammation. The fruits are also an excellent source of vitamin C to strengthen the immune system, potassium to balance fluid levels within the body, and contain calcium, zinc, vitamin E, copper, and iron. In addition to vitamins and minerals, Davidson plums include lutein, a carotenoid that assists in maintaining eye health.

Davidson plums have a versatile flavour that can be incorporated into savoury or sweet dishes, and the fruit’s ruby-coloured flesh imparts a dramatic hue to sauces. The fruits can be used in recipes similar to rhubarb, cranberries, or other naturally acidic fruits.

Plant Care

Light

Full sun, partial shade. If growing in full sun in hot climates, you may need to provide young trees with protection from the afternoon sun in summer

Soil

Well drained soil, enriched with  old compost or manure at bottom of holes during planting.

Fertilizer

They will benefit from seaweed juice and old compost manure at time of planting. Feed regularly with a generic stone fruit granule fertiliser. Feed more regularly towards the end of summer.

Wind

Avoid high wind, the stems can be spindly, they are okay once established and developed a canopy

Frost

Will cope with minor drought and frost.

Flowering

Starts fruiting after 3 years.
