Pecan Nut (Carya ilionoensis)

The nuts of the pecan are edible, with a rich, buttery flavour. Pecans are a good source of protein and unsaturated fats. They can be eaten fresh or used in cooking. One of the most common desserts is the pecan pie. The wood is also used in making furniture and wood flooring. Also makes a good shade tree.

It has an open, rounded crown and the trunk sports attractive grey, furrowed bark.

The leaves are mid green, turning yellow in autumn before falling. The flowers are quite insignificant, but are followed by the tasty nuts.

Plant Care

Light

Full sun, tree can tolerate very hot summers.

Water

Regular watering is not necessary. When young need regular watering until the plant is established.

Soil

They will grow on almost any soil other than a highly alkaline lime soil. Place the plant in rich well-drained soil and mulch with organic matter. This is a very hardy plant that will tolerate extreme conditions.

Trees benefit from organic mulch.

Frost

They are very drought tolerant, but would not like frost or heavy wind
