Star Apple (Chrysophyllum cainito)

*The Air Layered Plant is from a well established Reddish Colour Star Apple grown in NZ.

The star apple, cloaked in hues of regal purple or deep forest green, beckons with its mysterious allure. But its true beauty lies within. Slice it open, and nature's artistry is unveiled: a starburst pattern of delicate, milky-white flesh, each segment promising a burst of ambrosial sweetness. The taste is an enchanting dance of apple, grape, and lychee - a symphony of tropical flavors that melt on the tongue, reminiscent of creamy custard. Beyond its exquisite taste, this Caribbean gem is a treasure trove of nutrients, packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants.

Plant Care

  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained loamy soil with a neutral pH.
  • Watering: Regularly water to maintain moist soil, especially during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Temperature: Optimal temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C. Protect from frost.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced NPK fertilizer such as 10-10-10 quarterly during the growing season to support growth and fruit development.
  • Pruning: Prune to maintain health and shape the canopy, which can enhance air circulation and fruit production.
  • Mulching: Mulch around the base with organic material to help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Pest Control: Monitor for pests like aphids and scale insects. Use eco-friendly pesticides when needed.
  • Flowering and Fruiting: Produces star-shaped flowers followed by edible fruits that are ready to harvest when they soften and exhibit full color.

  • Feeding Regime: Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season helps promote vigorous growth and fruitful harvests.
