Evergreen sword-like, tough fibrous leaves arranged in a tight spiral around a short stem. Thornless. Leaves are deep brick-reddish toned foliage. The fruit is small to medium size, the taste is sweet and tangy.

Will fruit in temperate – warm temperate climates. Each individual plant when mature will send out a pink pineapple atop a long stem. When ready it changes to slightly yellow colour skin.

Dwarf pineapple size, only reaching a height of 75cm. Fruits are formed without pollination. The short flower stem elongates and enlarges. Consist of numerous small purple/red flowers. Usually the plant will bear one flower stalk at a time though there may be 2 or 3 heads.

Plant Care Instructions Doc

Plant Care

Light

Full sun or part shade. Keep them outdoors under shelter in extreme heat conditions.

Water

Does not need regular watering. It’s important to have a good drainage. More regular watering during summer.

Soil

It grows in all soil types, preferably in light and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. pH 4.5-7 is ideal.

Fertiliser

Take up a lot of their nutrition through their leaves, and the first few months after planting they rely only on their leaves.  Use diluted liquid fertilisers like fish emulsion or seaweed extract onto the pineapple plant and the surrounding soil. Or use pelleted chicken manure - sprinkle it on the soil very close to the base of the pineapple plant and make sure a bit falls into the bottom leaves.

Wind

Wind tolerant when small; keep it partly covered from strong wind.

Frost

Need protection from frost.

Fruiting

From crown - up to 24 month. From suckers up to 18 months. From slips within a year.
